Another Cold October, Take Two Today’s upload is the final version of “Another Cold October,” for the rock album, “What We Were Missing.” The lyrics, tempo, and bass line are essentially the same as the original demo version. The rhythm guitar has been changed to the Fernandes Sustainer with the newer effects chain that I’ve been using. The percussion has changed from a recorded drum loop to the hand percussion I’ve switched to. I added a manual arpeggio on the synthesizer throughout the song, and a synth pad effect to the chorus. The guitar solos are new and are also played on the Sustainer with the newer effects. These delayed the release of the song by a couple weeks, because it took me some time to write them, and even longer to get a good recording of them.
This song was inspired by an October cold spell, when I was outside in my neighborhood one evening, listening to music and hearing nearby church bells. It developed further at work the next day, after a stressful commute and dealing with coworkers. The basic message is that most people seem to be racing to get somewhere, hurrying to get something done, or focusing on getting better titles on their resumes. When a goal or destination has been reached, rather than enjoying it, they tend to immediately focus on the next task. And rarely does anyone seem to have an idea of why they do what they do – they’re just going through the motions. It’s an endless cycle of dissatisfaction in which I don’t want to participate.
